Article Discussions

What we thought we could use:

  • Donelly- rights are socially constructed. How does this apply to rights where we're from versus the rights in the country (countries) we choose to do our project on?
  • Fein-- Do we intervene? If we do, do we push our agenda?
  • Ranking of rights defined by culture. Example: Do they think the right to their land           is greater than the right to Palestinian life?
    • How far can you go with your own right before it infringes on someone else's? Example we discussed: Is the US right to land more important than the immigrants right to pursuit of happiness?

The documentary I was talking about in class is called Good Fortune. If you guys are able to find it and have time to watch it sometime, it really relates to our topic.

    Guantanamo Bay

In our group we primarily focused our discussion on Fein's cultural differences in perception of human rights and how that applies to treatment of detainees from the perspective of those from Middle Eastern and Western cultures.

    AIDS Group Post 1

In our discussion, we talked about how rights are defined. We came to the conclusion that defining rights is subjective and rights are socially constructed. Here in America, we have a general list of rights but this list is probably different from another nation's list of rights. We agreed that understanding the definition of human right is an essential foundation for I204.

    Article Discussions

    Donelly article:
Human rights seek to fuse moral vision and political practice
Government is principle violator and essential protector
Look into government role in the developing countries
Human rights treat people as creative agents with the right to shape their own life
           Victims should decide own path
    Rights are based on needs

    Howard and Donelly:
Human Rights should stem from respect of individual regardless of role in society

    Fein:
Human rights originally for the elite to protect their power
Corporations seem to still think like this

Look into corporations reasons for going into these countries
    Means justify cost

    Human Trafficking Post

Because there are no human rights that are globally accepted, some countries have rights to protect people from human trafficking, and some countries do not. Some countries do not respond to it as a crime and a problem, but look at it as a way to profit. Even in the United States, where it is said to be illegal, Human Trafficking still takes place because it is seen as a business and produces a profit.
