AIDS PROGRESS REPORT 1

AIDS - social stigma and revelations

Topic Introduction

For our action campaign we will be discussing the topic of AIDS. In the current American Society AIDS or Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome has gotten a rotten wrap. This disease while medical does not discriminate societally it has become known as the "gay disease" since the liberation of homosexuality in the late 60s early 70s. For instance on books in regards to blood donation any man who has had sexual intercourse with another man since the late 60s early 70s is now no longer able to donate blood. Through the use of pop culture as well as historical and current research we will try to examine this stigma and show that its is no longer the gay disease. We will also attempt to show that there is a positive side to this disease for instance the number of infected has decreased over the years. Through this attempt we will show gratitude for those who have donated to the various organizations that help with AIDS research and education, as well as stress the importance of continuing this great work that has already been done. 

Resources

The resources we intend to use, we hope will not only engage audiences that see our campaign but also spark them with the motivation to take action. We hope to achieve this goal by using a mixture of both good and bad pop cultural references to AIDS. As well as informational articles and educational books and journals to present the cold hard facts.

"Task Force" Assignments

After discussing as a group we believe that no one person should be responsible for one specific thing. So as far as assignments go we shall bring what we have to the table. However the work will be distributed equally. An example of how we will achieve this is that no one person apart of this campaign will post consecutively on the blog.

What We Will Try and Achieve 

With the direction this campaign is taking, there is no clear questions we want to examine specifically in regards to AIDS. Moreover we would like to use this campaign to break down one major and possible a few minor stigmas in regard to the disease, and show WHY and HOW you should and can get involved

Right now, our group members are reading and understanding our current sources. We are also actively searching for more sources such as songs and video clips. We are discussing how our final project will shape out and finalizing all of our sources.

Professor Quigley Question

Regarding the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Wyclef Jean the rap singer actually created his own charity which is now found to be bankrupt and left a trail of debt. The people of Haiti did not gain much from his charity even though it captured the international attention, especially the young people. Many times when a disaster hit there will always be charities created to help the victims. Do you think these charities are the most effective forms of help that the international community can provide for disaster or war victims? Or are there better ways that people can do to actually help?

Partnoy Question

Ms. Partnoy,

 History shows us that in the genocide of Nazi Germany, the Nazi's had favorties of the people who they deemed undesirable. They showed this favoritism by giving these people power. In your experience with the genocide going on in Argentine through these forced abductions and executions was there any favoritism shown to specific groups, for example men over women, or rich over poor. If so how was the manifested?

You mentioned some brutal living conditions when you were in prison. How did you stay sane and also what motivated you to write your series of essays?

Progress Report 3

Our group's progress for our AIDS action campaign so far has been all about figuring out how we can use our sources in our campaign to influence people to act.

The videos and the pictures will all be used to engage the audience into the discussion in a way that should be more interesting to them. The Family Guy video and Rent video will be used to show how the media represents AIDS as a "gay" disease. The "We Are the World" song will be used to supplement our campaign with a song that was created at that time to raise awareness about AIDS.

As for the books, the HIV law books will be used as a guide for navigating the legal system with AIDS and the other book is filled with 12 different people's accounts on AIDS and this will be used in the  presentation to relate to the audience on a personal level.

post 2 Aids

Cultural relatives from kirkpatrick allow us to look at Aids in a confusing light. Western society has its own assumptions on Aids and this causes us to project our views on other people's society. Aids in a society like Africa has different stigma and repercussions from society than in other places.

AIDS Group Post 1

In our discussion, we talked about how rights are defined. We came to the conclusion that defining rights is subjective and rights are socially constructed. Here in America, we have a general list of rights but this list is probably different from another nation's list of rights. We agreed that understanding the definition of human right is an essential foundation for I204.
